Ways to Get More Mileage Out of Your Communication Strategies

Media relations is essential to obtaining positive and earned media coverage for corporate news. Apart from fostering professional and personal relationships with the media, the nature of news also plays a huge role for media engagement. There are various things organizations need to inform the public about, but how do PR and communications professionals ensure that their news is relevant, authentic and informative? It is learnt that press releases that consist of multimedia elements attract more views as they are more enticing and comprehensive. PR Newswire invites speakers from the media and PR industries to address ways on pitching the relevant media to sell story ideas; incorporating multimedia content in communication strategies; and fundamentals of writing a press release that will interest the media.

Topics to be covered during the session include:

  • Different types of multimedia that can intrigue journalists and target audience.
  • The best practices for writing press releases that generate media pickups.
  • Pitching to international media.
  • The Do's and Don'ts of pitching the media.
  • Types of news that interest the media.
  • How to combat fake news?
  • How to drive more discovery with new SEO tactics.

Profile of Speakers:

Ian Yee is the Deputy Executive Editor and Producer of R.AGE, an award-winning video journalism platform under Star Media Group. The team won the 2017 Kajai Award, Malaysia's top award for journalists, and was recognised last year as the world's best youth news publisher when it won the World Young Reader Prize in Washington DC.
His work with R.AGE has brought multiple awards in the fields of journalism, activism, marketing, and digital innovation.
Today, he oversees a team of 11 talented young multimedia journalists who have produced some ground-breaking content, such as the Predator In My Phone online documentary series, which successfully lobbied the Malaysian Parliament for new laws against child sexual grooming.

Joshua Cohen is the Vice President of Content Licensing & Distribution at PR Newswire. He develops and manages the relationship with the thousands of websites, databases and content aggregators around the world that publish and distribute PR Newswire’s news release feeds including the rapidly growing multimedia/social media and mobile news release segments. His more than 20 years’ experience in the development and distribution of news releases has given him a unique ability to work with websites and portals in terms of content selection, positioning of the news content on the website or distribution vehicle along with other criteria to maximize the ROI from the feed both for the website as well as for the client issuing the news release.

Shannon Teoh is the Malaysia Bureau Chief at The Straits Times. He cut his teeth in print, web and wire agency journalism before joining The Straits Times in 2014, after a decade of covering everything from pop culture to politics, cars to crime, and economics to eating. He took a one-year break from Malaysia news in 2009 after winning the Chevening scholarship to complete his postgraduate studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, focusing on political communication. After returning to Malaysia, he spent two years as an assistant news editor at The Malaysian Insider before moving on to become a local correspondent for Agence France-Presse in 2012. He's loved football, food and fiction all his life, and is still trying to figure out a way to combine all three in a get-rich-quick scheme.
